PANEL DISCUSSION
Neither churches nor secular agencies have adequately responded to the cries of those experiencing one of the most underreported crimes in the United States: sexual assault.
These violations occur across the entire lifespan—from infancy and childhood, to adolescence, adulthood, and even advanced age.
While many advocacy programs have emerged in response to the less common but devastating “Stranger Danger” assaults, the painful truth remains: the majority of sexual assaults are committed by family members, caregivers, and others known to—and often once loved by—the victims.
The result? Incalculable pain. Lifelong trauma. Silence. Shame. Isolation. Re-victimization. Many survivors struggle to heal, sometimes for the rest of their lives. Some lives are cut short—at the hands of their abusers.
These truths are difficult to hear.
They are even more difficult for survivors to speak.
So we ask:
What silences so many women, children, and men who have endured these acts of power and control?
How do families, across generations, keep such secrets in the name of love, honor, and denial?
How do myths about victim blaming and shaming continue to prevail?
Where is our collective hope?
Where is our collective commitment to healing justice?
Let us come together to create new responses in safe spaces created for healing practices, across every identity, background, and system of oppression.
We believe we can.
We believe we must.
